Classes are taught in the Club 420, an entry-level, two‐person dinghy that is rigged with a mainsail, jib, spinnaker, and trapeze. The Club 420 can be handled by both youth and adults and is commonly used in learn-to-sailing programs and for high school and collegiate racing. We welcome completely new sailors, beginning and intermediate sailors, keelboat sailors wanting to try a small dinghy, and experienced sailors! Instructors will pair sailors of varied experience levels, learning styles, and other considerations (including weight). Instruction will focus on basic sailing skills, capsize recovery, rigging, terminology, knot tying, points of sail, tacking, jibing, and safety, with an overall emphasis on FUN and becoming comfortable on the water. Students will practice capsizing and swimming while wearing life jackets. Be prepared to capsize multiple times. Classes are generally held within the confines of the Hood River Marina, but classes may sail outside the marina when conditions permit. If favorable conditions exist, and all boat-handling competencies are reached, trapezes and possibly spinnakers may be introduced. We’re also inviting children, 12 and older, to enroll with a participating parent to encourage the love of sailing within the whole family!
