Description: Open to sailors who have successfully completed beginning sailing and wish to expand their skills. Classes are taught in the Club 420, an entry-level, two‐person dinghy that is rigged with a mainsail, jib, spinnaker, and trapeze. The Club 420 can be handled by both youth and adults and is commonly used for high school and collegiate racing. This class is open to intermediate sailors who have outgrown Optis or Bics, and sailors with previous 420 experience. Instruction includes basic sailing skills, rigging, knot tying, safety, and boat handling. With an emphasis on teamwork and fun, the class will work on intermediate skills of both crewing and helming. Classes are generally in the Columbia River unless conditions do not permit. If favorable conditions exist, and all boat-handling competencies are reached, trapezes and possibly spinnakers may be introduced. Students will practice capsizing and swimming while wearing life jackets.
